The first Perch Photo Contest drew more than 100 entries from readers around Cornwall, Akwesasne, and SDG. As we sifted through the submissions, it became clear that our local photographers—amateur and professional—were keen to snap and share the best stories of our region.

RIVER
WINNER Tim Ouimet got this moody snap near Boundary Road in Cornwall shortly after the sound of foghorns lured him to the river’s edge. HONOURABLE MENTION Angele Roy was Mesmerized by the blending of the colours on that particular day, Angele Roy pulled over into the parking lot of Precious Blood Church in Glen Walter to snap this serene scene. HONOURABLE MENTION Out on an artifact-finding mission with her partner on the Long Sault Parkway, Sarah Beach came across this incredible sunset. She says it made them stop and appreciate everything beautiful in life.
PEOPLE
WINNER In this photo, Marjorie Kaniehtonkie Skidders admires her grandson’s power within. She captured six-year-old Tarihowaneh’s strong pose on the family beach at Racquette Point in Akwesasne. HONOURABLE MENTION Christian Francis took this photo of his girlfriend at Countryside Adventures in Moose Creek. The couples was celebrating one of their first dates. HONOURABLE MENTION Victoria Perry’s haunting photo gives the illusion that this person is walking in one of the coldest, most isolated places in the world. In fact, it was taken on the river in the Long Sault Parkway.
WINTER
WINNER Megan Grotenhuis loves winter and so do her darling dogs. She snapped this photo of Sherlock and Watson in the early morning at her home in Inkerman. HONOURABLE MENTION Marjorie Kaniethonkie Skidders says this giant pine tree—which towers over her home in Akwesasne—offers her peace on quiet winter days, solace on snowy days, and comfort on rainy days. HONOURABLE MENTION Jane McLaren captured the winter sun fading to sunset and the simple beauty of nature at Gray’s Creek in Cornwall.
